Its comfortable design, colorful lighting, simplistic buttons and accurate sensors will be emulated for years to come. Razer is committed to delivering high-quality gaming equipment to virtual athletes across the world, and this USB gaming mouse is no different.

There’s no awkward finger placement and it caters to the default resting position of your hand. And don’t worry – Razer didn’t forget the lefties. Since there are only five buttons, there aren’t a lot of options when it comes to choosing custom settings for each button. The Razer Synapse software can reprogram all of the buttons except the left-click one. In a way, this makes things easier, especially for first-timers, since you’re probably not going to make a fatal move by accidentally clicking the wrong button.

The “Chroma” part of the DeathAdder gets its name from the mouse’s lighting effects. The scroll wheel and the logo light up, and you can choose which color you want for each of them. You can also customize how the color appears, whether its static, cycling or breathing. The latter is only available on the logo. The Razer Synapse program allows you to tweak the effects to your favorite.

Razer Synapse isn’t just good for the buttons and lights – you can change the mouse sensitivity and test the calibration with it as well. You can also test the lift sensors to see how far you can move the mouse up from the pad before the program detects movement. The stats tracking feature can analyze your gameplay and helps you to become a better player through heat maps. You can also store specific configurations to different profiles, so when you’re switching between games you don’t have to reset the buttons every time.

If you pair the Chroma with another Razer product, you can program them to communicate with each other for ultimate in-game expertise. You can change the sensitivity on your mouse simply by touching a button on your Razer keyboard. Your keyboard can also store macros for your mouse as shortcuts.

Pricing and Specifications

You can find the DeathAdder for several different prices online. When it’s in stock on Razer’s website it usually goes for 69.99. However, Amazon offers it at a discounted price of 57.99 plus free shipping. Walmart has sold it for 49.88 before, so your best bet is to check several sites before buying to see which is cheaper. Keep in mind, the price goes down even more if you’re okay with using a refurbished version. Here’s a look at the product specifications:

  • Dimensions: 2.76 x 5.04 x 1.73 inches
  • 1,000 Hertz Ultrapolling
  • 10,000 DPI optical sensor
  • Up to 300 inches per second/50g acceleration
  • 7-foot braided fiber cable

To install this mouse on your computer, you’ll need either a PC (at least Windows 7) or a Mac (at least Mac OS X v10.8) with an open USB port. You’ll also need an internet connection, 100MB of hard disk space and a Razer Synapse registration.

Using the Razer DeathAdder Chroma

The public perception of the Chroma is generally positive. We checked out a few places where it’s on sale to see what kind of reviews people left. Here’s a look at the pros and cons for each seller.

The star rating for Amazon is a bit skewed since reviews are for several different Razer DeathAdder mouse styles, not just Chroma. However, each review names the specific style it’s for, so we went through several in search of any patterns. The negative reviews all had similar complaints of non-functional buttons after only a few months’ worth of use. Others say their biggest problem is with the Razer Synapse program:

Software is buggy and annoying, not tied to Windows account login, but with an online account. Very annoying, especially considering one must rely on the software to switch between sensitivity. Terrible for a gamer. – Lint

Positive reviews mentioned smooth scrolling and awesome lighting effects as highlights. One person in particular said being able to have complete control is what counts:

To get extra-nerdy on you, I’m a rushing, bolt-action sniper in Battlefield, so making shots connect is important. I have a great deal of control when taking shots and I feel more accurate now. Controlling “weapon recoil” with fully-automatic weapons feels easier and more precise now too. – M. Styler

Many Amazon users said this mouse is excellent for people buying their first gaming mouse since it’s easy to set up and comfortable to use.

There are numerous positive reviews on Walmart’s website, with people raving about the customized lighting design and quick response rate. Most people wrote about how well the mouse fits in their hands:

This is the best mouse I’ve ever used. Perfect mouse for palm grip and claw (as I am). Moves so effortlessly across my mouse pad; but also stops on a dime for no missed shots or kills in your favorite fps or rpg. The synapse program is extremely in depth and can tell you things about your mouse and style of play you never thought you needed to know! – OnceSaved

There are barely any bad reviews on the Walmart product page, but one person does mention constantly dealing with a pattern of dying Razer mice:

These mice are great, at first. I’ve been buying Razer mice for years, and every single one of them has failed after 1.5 to 2 years of use. I’m tired of them failing on me, and I’m tired of having to contact Razer for warranty support. If the failure rate doesn’t bother you, the mice are great while they work. – Heatsink

Amazon users had similar complaints, labeling the product “made to break,” or in other words, claiming Razer purposely gave the Chroma a short lifespan to force customers to shell out more cash to buy newer versions.

Many Newegg reviewers mentioned how easy it was to set up the mouse and start customization quickly. Comfort, weight and good accuracy were also highlighted:

Mouse is very clean and not too “in your face” like a lot of [mice] tend to be these days. The feel is superb when you grip it in your hands as you play games. The braided cord feels amazing and doesn’t stick to the desk in any weird way. – Vincent S.

A couple of people mentioned having issues with stuck buttons, namely button five and the scroll wheel. One of those reviewers did mention that they had a refurbished mouse, so that could’ve been the issue itself. Another reviewer talked about having a connection issue:

Unfortunately, after only a week or two of owning the device, it would randomly disconnect. I could unplug and replug the USB cable to remedy this, however it occurred more frequently as the weeks went by. Now, after about a month, the DeathAdder Chroma will disconnect frequently in the midst of use and reconnecting it does not solve the issue most of the time. – Joshua R.

The same user said he planned to replace the mouse with a newer version, since he enjoyed the quick and responsive movement it previously gave him.

Gamestop buyers had a lot of similar praise for the Chroma. It has a great feel, comfort that prevents tiring out and awesome colors:

I recently converted to PC gaming and have been eyeballing Razer products for a while. I was in the store and saw this on sale and had to have it. The mouse fits great in my hand, works like a charm, and of course CHROMA!!! Color me impressed with Razer. I will be adding to my rig with more of their products. – checkershur

Some people thought the price tag was a little too high for what the product is worth. Others simply gave four stars with no explanation of why the fifth star was docked. One person brought up an interesting point about using the mouse without a pad:

I enjoy the Deathadder line of [mice] by Razor. However, this particular mouse seems to [be] a bit more flashy than the rest. Not in itself a bad thing, and I think I can grow to enjoy it, but for the moment, it throws me off. I ordered the mouse for its simple design, so I still got what I wanted. The biggest change and complaint I have is that this mouse seems to require a mouse pad when my last Deathadder did not. – gameladyperson

The reviewer went on to say the flashy features don’t function very well, but they will be something to grow accustomed to.

How It Compares

Some of the Chroma’s biggest competitors are other Razer mice. On the other hand, Logitech is a big competitor of Razer. There are hundreds of different options out there, and it’s hard to narrow it down, but here are a few picks that are comparable:

  • High-Precision 16,000 DPI Optical Sensor: Offers on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment through dedicated DPI buttons...
  • Immersive, Customizable Chroma RGB Lighting: Includes 16.8 million colors w/ included preset profiles; syncs with...

The DeathAdder Elite is a bit of an update to the Chroma, and it’s considered one of Razer’s bestselling mice.

  • The comfortable grip is perfect for anyone, whether you have a claw or palm grip.
  • It’s large and light with seven programmable buttons.
  • The Elite comes with the Razer Synapse program for easy customization.
  • The 5G 16,000 DPI optical sensor allows for even more control in gaming.

The Elite is definitely a large improvement over the Chroma, but seven buttons may be too much for a newer gamer who isn’t used to precise customization.

This Logitech model has all the bells and whistles and then some. It brings a new meaning to the word personalization, complete with five 3.6-gram weights that you can position for a feel that works perfectly with your hand preference.

  • You can choose the color of your logo, but some of the profile settings require you to download additional software from the Logitech website.
  • The specialized Logitech-G Delta Zero optical sensor with up to 12,000 DPI ensures precision targeting.
  • 11 programmable buttons give you the ultimate control over your battlefield.

Compared to the DeathAdder Chroma, this Logitech is much more advanced. It depends on your knowledge of customization and preference to perform at its peak. However, the multiple buttons can become tricky to navigate if your fingers are on the bigger side.

Razer Deathadder Chroma Lighting Effects CORSAIR Sabre - RGB Gaming Mouse - Lightweight Design - 10,000 DPI...
  • Light weight -- Just 100g total weight. React more quickly and play longer with less fatigue
  • 10000 DPI optical sensor and multi-color DPI indicator - Confident, high-accuracy tracking makes every click count
  • Four-zone 16.8 million color backlighting - Enjoy virtually infinite customization

Corsair Gaming has one of the best mottos out there for their Sabre mouse: “Light Weight. Heavy Damage.” It only weighs 100 grams, which is 5 grams less than the Chroma.

  • Every LED light on this mouse is programmable, with millions of color options to choose from, much like the Chroma.
  • The 10,000 DPI optical sensor is well made for high accuracy smart tracking.
  • Users have the option to program eight strategically-placed buttons.
  • Choose your own polling rate of up to 1,000 Hertz.

Unfortunately, the Sabre isn’t available for lefties, so that eliminates this option right off the bat for some people. The exterior of the mouse has been described as slippery, which can also be a problem for those of us who get a little sweaty while gaming.

What We Think

The Razer DeathAdder Chroma is an awesome mouse for two groups of people:

  1. Those who are new to the world of gaming peripherals and need something easy to start with, and
  2. Those who prefer simplicity and comfort over finite customization.

With only five buttons, it has the minimum required amount of customization available to users. While the lighting effects are cool, just having the logo and scroll wheel light up is minimalistic compared to what some of the other Razer models have to offer. The DeathAdder also isn’t wireless, which can get annoying when wires interfere with gameplay.

Overall, it’s a solid starter mouse, but you could get a lot more features for the same price in a different mouse. Plus, this one could die within a few months of using it, and that’s simply a waste of money. We give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
